- The New Yorker • April 28, 2008

The Dessoff Choirs is pleased to announce its 2008-2009 season, one of our most exciting to date! Combining diverse and interesting self-produced programs with thrilling collaborations with the New York Philharmonic, our 84th year begins and ends with two of the most dramatic works in the choral repertoire: Honegger’s King David and Mahler’s Symphony No. 8: Symphony of a Thousand.

Join us on November 20th, as we explore the musical legacy of Biblical hero David, and on March 7th, when we travel this country’s musical routes, leading from shape-note hymns to Charles Ives, in a program to be recorded live. June 2009 brings our season to a climactic close, as we join forces with the New York Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall in Benjamin Britten’s powerful War Requiem and Gustav Mahler’s choral masterpiece, Symphony No. 8, both under the direction of Lorin Maazel. Dessoff is honored to be sharing the stage as Maestro Maazel leads his final performances as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic. Limited discounted tickets to all seven New York Philharmonic performances will soon be available through Dessoff.

Click here for more information on individual concerts. Season subscriptions are only $50 and guarantee preferred seating, so order yours today!

Highlights from last season include Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, under the direction of Yuri Temirkanov, at Carnegie Hall; the U.S. premiere of Rued Langgard’s Music of the Spheres with the American Symphony Orchestra, Leon Botstein conducting, at Avery Fisher Hall; a charming performance by singer/actor Dominic Chianese at our spring benefit; and a festive collaboration with St. Bartholomew’s Boy & Girl Choristers in Britten’s moving holiday cantata, St. Nicolas.

BILLINGS TO IVES: The Shape of American Choral Music

James Bagwell, conductor
The Dessoff Choirs

Looking back to William Billings and other early American composers, this intimately-scaled program explores the development of choral music in this country from the late 18th through the early 20th century, when Charles Ives composed his pivotal 90th Psalm. Featured works include shape-note hymns, Hora novissima by Horatio Parker, and three works by Ives: Psalm 67, Psalm 90, and an excerpt from his cantata The Celestial Country. Period readings lend additional context in depicting how tradition and innovation have shaped the American choral landscape. Come be a part of our first live recording in years.

We will sing 3 performances of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem on June 11-13. On June 24-27, we will sing 4 performances of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 8.

Dessoff seeks qualified choral singers who read music proficiently, sing with good blend and intonation, will prepare music independently, and commit to the season’s rehearsals and concert dates. We rehearse on Mondays on the Upper East Side.

We have scheduled 2 evenings for Music Director James Bagwell to hear singers who seek to participate in our full 2008-2009 season:
Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Interested choral singers should send an e-mail with name, address, phone(s), voice part, and preferred date to auditions@dessoff.org. Our Membership Chair will respond to schedule a private 10-minute audition that consists of vocalizing to demonstrate range and vocal production, and sight-singing. NO prepared piece is required.

Dessoff will hold SEPARATE auditions for members of the Dessoff Symphonic Choir who hope to sing in the NY Philharmonic collaborations. Before the First World War, Margarete Dessoff lived with her father, Otto Dessoff, conductor of the Frankfurt Opera, in their home across the street from the aunt and uncle of the American banker Felix Warburg. As a boy, Mr. Warburg came to know Madame Dessoff from visits to his uncle's house, and it was this friendship that moved him to bring her to America after the War for a recuperative visit.

Fortunately for American lovers of fine music, Madame Dessoff remained in New York instead of returning to Europe. Her American reputation was well on the way to full establishment through her Madrigal Chorus of the Institute of Musical Art when she and Angela Diller (of the Diller-Quaille School of Music) formed the Adesdi chorus of women's voices in1924, named from parts of each founder's name.

In October 1929, the A Cappella Singers of New York, a mixed chorus, began rehearsing in the evenings (the Adesdi women rehearsed during the day). The Dessoff Chorus, therefore, referred to two separate groups, constituting what is known today as The Dessoff Choirs, Inc.

There are two principles that The Dessoff Choirs has always upheld: the commitment to present music that would not otherwise be heard in the ordinary course of musical events, and a pledge to provide an opportunity for talented amateurs to sing some of the world's finest choral masterpieces. It may be inconceivable to music lovers of today that there could be anything avant garde about the music of Machaut, Lassus, Josquin des Pres, Victoria, Schütz, and Monteverdi. Yet for all practical purposes, the music of these giants was virtually unknown in the 1930s, not only to the amateur musician but to the professional. Nevertheless, Madame Dessoff was conducting concerts of music by these early composers during that time. When she retired from the leadership of the Dessoff Choirs in 1936, such music was still relatively unknown outside of New York City and Dessoff's concerts.

Under Mme. Dessoff's successor, Paul Boepple, conductor of the Choirs for 32 years, Dessoff continued to pioneer performances and recordings of these pre-Bach masters. In addition, Boepple edited The Dessoff Choirs Series for the Theodore Presser Company, a distinguished collection of 48 editions of early works previously unavailable in this country. Generations of choral singers throughout the United States include the series among their first exposures to this music.

As interest in early music became more widespread, Dessoff's emphasis on this period diminished and its repertory widened. Boepple was also at one time a close associate of Arthur Honegger's, and with Dessoff he premiered both Judith and Nicolas de Flue, as well as Frank Martin's Golgotha, George Perle's Songs of Praise and Lamentation, and other contemporary works.

Following Boepple's retirement, Michael Hammond conducted the Choirs during his ten-year tenure in more memorable performances of works by 20th-century composers, including Schoenberg and Stravinsky, while at the same time maintaining Dessoff's tradition of giving stirring performances of earlier music.

In her twelve years with the chorus (1983-1995), Amy Kaiser guided Dessoff's repertoire with the commissioning and premiering of new choral works of significant quality and the discovery of music, especially from non-Western traditions, that had not yet become part of the canon of choral singing. During this period Dessoff returned to the precedent of multiple choirs set by Madame Dessoff: The Dessoff Choirs, a moderately-sized core chorus of 70 singers, The Dessoff Chamber Choir of 22 singers, The Dessoff Symphonic Choir of 195 members assembled for major symphonic works, and an informal singing group known as The Dessoff Irregulars, which was constituted primarily for community-service programs in hospitals, schools, and nursing homes.

Kent Tritle (1996-2004), determined the group's musical direction and mission into the 21st century. In his eight seasons with the chorus, Tritle not only upheld Dessoff's traditional goal of programming diverse works from the C.P.E. Bach Magnificat to Rachmaninoff's Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom to a world premiere of Whitman Cantata by Marshall Coid, but also instituted a series of vocal workshops, musicianship training, and language coachings that served to put Dessoff's performances on a par with many professional choruses across the country.

The Dessoff Choirs has always attracted a very special type of choral amateur: individuals who are not only dedicated lovers of music, but who also have sufficiently deep musical training and involvement to explore and discover for themselves the beauties of mostly unknown musical masterpieces, and to apply themselves to the point of performing and communicating these works for the benefit of the public in concert halls and through recordings. Aside from the common spirit of musical involvement, enthusiasm, and dedication to the choral art form, individual members of the chorus have a wide variety of backgrounds and encompass a wide diversity of national origins, age groups, and educational and professional training. Thus, the kinds of music that Dessoff has performed, published, and recorded, and the kinds of amateurs that have been drawn into the membership, have provided the organization's unique quality.

It is The Dessoff Choirs' philosophy that the perspective, maturity, and health of any society is dependent to a great extent not only on the involvement of its members in the pleasures of the mind and their participation in those activities which enrich and ennoble their lives, but in the providing of ways to do so. Thus, we believe that The Dessoff Choirs' performance of hitherto unknown music, and its 80 years of service to the musical needs of New Yorkers as singers and New Yorkers as listeners, has made a significant contribution to the cultural enlightenment of New York and indeed, the whole country.

Mr. Ryan joined the Greater Trenton Symphony for its New Year’s Eve performance in 2006 of Rhapsody in Blue.

Steven Ryan earned his bachelor of music degree from the University of Minnesota. While in Minneapolis, he had the honor of assisting Sir Neville Marriner as a rehearsal pianist, often working one-on-one with him and his guest soloists. Mr. Ryan also appeared with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra under the baton of Charles Dutoit. He placed second in the Minnesota
Orchestra’s WAMSO competition, playing before a jury that included Pinchas Zukerman and Sir Neville Marriner.

The Dessoff Choirs, one of New York City’s leading choruses, is an independent, non-profit organization, not affiliated with any religious or community group. Founded in 1924 by Margarete Dessoff, it has established a reputation for pioneering performances of choral works from the pre-Baroque era through the 21st century. The “s” in Choirs acknowledges the group’s various ensembles, ranging from the large Symphonic Choir that appears with major orchestras, to the smaller Chamber Choir heard during some programs.

In the mid-20th century, Dessoff’s reputation grew throughout the country thanks to a unique and distinguished collection of Renaissance pieces, then little-known, edited by music director Paul Boepple. Many of these pieces were released by the choir on LP. In 1999, Dessoff received the ASCAP/Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming, for pieces including the world premiere of Paul Moravec’s “Songs of Love and War.” That piece may be heard on Dessoff’s CD Reflections, which also features works by Robert Convery, John Corigliano, and Ned Rorem.

Dessoff is active in New York’s musical life, presenting its own concerts under the baton of Music Director James Bagwell and in collaboration with ensembles ranging from the Kronos Quartet to the New York Philharmonic. In October, 2006, the Dessoff Symphonic Choir performed with Vladimir Ashkenazy and the NHK Symphony Orchestra of Tokyo at Carnegie Hall and at SUNY Purchase’s Performing Arts Center. That was Dessoff’s fourth program in four years with Maestro Ashkenazy. Other recent engagements have been with the American Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, and with Tan Dun in his haunting Water Passion after Saint Matthew.

Dessoff has taken part in numerous New York, American, and world premieres, by composers such as Marshall Coid, Philip Glass, and Sir John Tavener. Dessoff has performed frequently at the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival, with the Lincoln Center Festival, and at the Mostly Mozart Festival, including collaborations with the Mark Morris Dance Group and an appearance in the PBS “Live from Lincoln Center” Emmy-nominated telecast of Mozart’s Requiem. Other major orchestras with which Dessoff has performed include the Cleveland Orchestra, the London Philharmonia, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Philharmonia Baroque, and Opera Orchestra of New York.
