January-March 2012

Johann Sebastian Bach is the great prism of European music history. A keen student of musical traditions and styles, Bach studied all the major trends in western music that preceded him. He synthesized various aspects of those genres, forging his own distinct musical language from the raw material of a tradition that he venerated. Even if we are not familiar with the models he studied, we encounter through Bach the many facets of the European Baroque: the sober counterpoint of the North Germans, the florid ornamentation of the French, the brilliant virtuosity and melodic invention of the Italians. But going further back, we also encounter in Bach’s music the stolid chorales of Martin Luther’s Reformation, the strict polyphony of the Italian Renaissance and even the ethereal beauty of Roman plainchant—music from the dawn of the common era. Johann Sebastian Bach was the keeper of the flame, a natural encyclopedist whose ability to synthesize all forms of western music ensured that his legacy would be forever entwined with his heritage.

In the same way that all earlier musical styles were refracted by Bach’s compositional prism—reinterpreted, renewed and reinvigorated—so too has Bach’s music been refracted by the prism of each successive generation of composers. J.S. Bach has remained the touchstone of western music for two and a half centuries, the authority figure that composers would either seek to please or defiantly reject. From the time of Bach’s own sons until today, musicians have grappled with Bach’s legacy. Many have been drawn to his mastery of counterpoint; others have been attracted to his depth of musical expression, his ability to convey a wide range of emotions, his peerless melodies, and the sheer joy of his music. By exploring Bach’s legacy through the music of the past 260 years, we are experiencing at once Bach’s reflected genius and the musical Zeitgeist of every generation.

As he drew together a catalog of all the musical styles that existed up to his own day in the B Minor Mass, Bach paid particular homage to the past through the use of the stile antico—the “ancient style” of composition that drew upon Gregorian chant and Renaissance polyphony. In this concert, we present the incomparable Missa sine Nomine by Palestrina, a work that Bach himself performed in Leipzig, but so too do we sing works composed well after Bach’s time by musicians who also found inspiration in earlier styles—Bach’s creative impulse reflected through the lens of later composers. In two solo instrumental works by Ingram Marshall, fragments of Bach’s music appear but remain ephemeral—beams of Bach’s light refracted through the stained glass of the 21st century.

III. Robin Holloway: Gilded Goldbergs

Tuesday, February 7, 2012, 7:30 p.m.
Weill Recital Hall, Carnegie Hall
881 7th Avenue
Steven Ryan and Catherine Venable, pianists

It is possible that no single composer’s music has been more arranged and re-arranged than that of J.S. Bach. Some composers are content simply to render Bach’s music more or less verbatim, but transformed into the aesthetic of their time. Others absorb Bach’s musical language and then allow a piece to emerge from the chrysalis of their own voice, a new work outwardly divergent from Bach’s, but with Bach’s music in its DNA. Robin Holloway’s Gilded Goldbergs combines both approaches. The project, a reimagining of the Goldberg Variations for two pianos, began life as a straightforward reworking of the original music so that Holloway, a Cambridge music professor and Spectator music critic, could play the variations with his friends. But as the work took on a life of its own, the British composer “gilded” the original with flights of fancy and spectacular virtuosity.

IV. Bach Cantata Sing-in

Saturday, February 11, 2012, 2-4 p.m.
Immanuel Lutheran Church – Sanctuary
122 East 88th Street

Not only did Bach turn to the works of earlier composers for inspiration and compositional models, he also reworked his own compositions throughout his life. This practice—called “parody” by musicologists—was very common in the Baroque period. It reflected the station of the composer as artisan, rather than artist; it was a way of consolidating the vocabulary of Baroque musical gestures and their related meanings; and it was a by-product of the all-important “Doctrine of Affects”, which insisted that each movement of music communicate one over-riding emotion. In this way, a cantata movement about giving thanks was transformed into the “Gratias agimus tibi” and a cantata chorus about weeping and lamentation became the “Crucifixus”. In this Sing-In, open to singers from outside Dessoff as well, we will read five choral movements from the B Minor Mass and the original cantata movements they were based on, examining how Bach reworked the original while keeping its emotional and theological meaning intact.

V. J.S. Bach: Mass in B Minor, BWV 232

Saturday, March 3, 2012, 8 p.m.
Church of St. Mary the Virgin
145 West 46th Street
The Dessoff Choirs & Arcadia Players

Many questions have long surrounded Bach’s monumental B Minor Mass: Why would a Lutheran church composer write an ostensibly Catholic Mass? Why would one of the most inventive composers in western music history resort to reusing so many of his own compositions in the setting of the Mass? And why does it seem that the work was never performed in Bach’s lifetime—or even, as some suggest, never even intended to be performed at all? Perhaps the most convincing answer is that Bach compiled the B Minor Mass to stand as a catalog of all the musical styles known at that time, from the earliest Gregorian chants to the newly fashionable style galant. In creating a work that has come to be regarded as the apex of human artistic expression, Bach also left a musical catalog for future generations.

Dessoff presents its inaugural Midwinter Festival—a series of that offers the unique opportunity to experience choral masterworks in a larger cultural and historical context. This year’s festival explores both how J.S. Bach absorbed myriad musical styles and how later composers have been inspired by his astonishing legacy. The diverse festival events build towards the transcendent Mass in B Minor, performed in collaboration with the early instrument ensemble Arcadia Players.

BERNSTEIN	Chichester Psalms

DOVE	The Passing of the Year
BRAHMS	Liebeslieder Walzes (selections)

Although the piano is sometimes seen as an adjunct to the choral rehearsal—the instrument that stands in for the symphony orchestra—much wonderful music has been composed especially for piano and choir. This concert features 20th-century pieces written for one or two pianists, percussion, and choir, including Bernstein’s high-voltage Chichester Psalms, David Conte’s lyric Invocation and Dance, a set of quintessential American works by Charles Ives, Samuel Barber and Gwyneth Walker, plus a selection of Brahms’s most beloved Liebeslieder waltzes. From England comes Jonathan Dove’s The Passing of the Year, commissioned in 2000 by the London Symphony Chorus. The combination of lyrical voices, virtuoso pianists, and brilliant percussion is irresistible.

A devout Eastern Orthodox Christian, Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is best
known among choral enthusiasts for a group of large-scale religious works from
the 1980s and ’90s, the first of which is his beautiful and haunting Passion
from 1982. Through the use of chant-like lines traded among soloists,
chamber players, and choir, Pärt weaves a mesmerizing musical tapestry that tells the story of Jesus’ crucifixion.

Prokofiev started work on his Piano Concerto No. 3 in 1913, but did not complete the work until 1921. The composer gave the first performance of the concerto on December 16, 1921 with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Frederick Stock.

Ravel began work on Daphnis et Chloe in 1909 on a commission from Sergei Diaghilev and completed the work in 1912. Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes gave the premiere of the ballet at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on June 8, 1912.

At age 35, Yannick Nézet-Séguin is one of the fastest-rising international stars in classical music. In 2008, he was appointed music director of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and principal guest conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He has been artistic director and principal conductor of the Orchestre Métropolitain (Montréal) since March 2000. In June 2010, he was appointed to his post at The Philadelphia Orchestra, to begin in September 2012.

A native of Montreal, his initial studies at the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec in Montréal (five prizes with great distinction) were followed by master classes with renowned conductors, notably the great Italian maestro Carlo Maria Giulini. He has worked with most of the major orchestras across Canada.

Mr. Nézet-Séguin also has appeared with a wide range of orchestras in Europe. In May 2009, he made his debut with the Netherlands Opera conducting Janacek’s Makropoulus Case; during Spring 2010, he returned for Puccini’s Turandot; another production is scheduled for 2011-2012. Recently, he made his acclaimed Metropolitan Opera debut, conducting a new production of Carmen starring Roberto Alagna and Elina Garanca; he returns this month for a new production of Verdi’s Don Carlo. Debuts for La Scala, Milan and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, will take place in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012, respectively.

The choir’s projection and enunciation were unusually clear. … Beethoven’s spirit rang out with an explosive jubilance.
            - The New York Times, March 30, 2010

Join the excitement as our 86th season begins under the baton of Dessoff’s new music director, Chris Shepard, a gifted conductor and Bach scholar who has delighted international audiences with his interpretations of choral works ranging from the mystical to the contemporary. We are also pleased to welcome our new executive director, Jane Colvin.

Our 2010-11 season kicks off in October, proudly continuing the tradition of Dessoff “firsts”—this time by appearing at Radio City Music Hall and singing in Elvish—as we perform the soundtrack from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers live with the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra. (October 8 and October 9 at 7:30 pm — details here.)

In November, Dessoff presents a glorious array of French choral music, including the lush and tranquil Duruflé Requiem, in Manhattan (November 20th at 8:00 pm, St. James’ Church, Madison Ave at 71st Street) and Brooklyn (November 21st at 4:00pm, Old First Reformed Church). Tickets available at the door.

In December, we appear at Lincoln Center’s newly renovated Alice Tully Hall with the Juilliard Orchestra, under the baton of Philadelphia Orchestra music director designate Yannick Nézet-Séguin, in a performance of Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé (December 13 at 8:00 pm, Alice Tully Hall).

In February, Dessoff performs Arvo Pärt’s spare, mystical Passio (February 25, 2011 at 8:00 pm, Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Times Square).

And our season concludes with a literal bang in May at St. George’s Church in Manhattan, with a program featuring 20th-century masters and their music for choir, pianos, and percussion (May 14, 2011 at 8:00 pm).

This season builds on last year’s rich artistic experiences, which included thrilling collaborations with Ray Davies on The Late Show with David Letterman and at The Town Hall, and with Iván Fischer and the Budapest Festival Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall, alongside our self-produced concerts of music ranging from baroque masterpieces to a world premiere—not to mention the release of our latest CD, Glories on Glories, a live recording of American choral music ranging from Billings to Ives (available on iTunes).

Recent Dessoff highlights include acclaimed, sold-out performances of Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem and Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 at Avery Fisher Hall with the New York Philharmonic in Lorin Maazel’s final appearances as music director. Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, the capstone of the Philharmonic’s live recordings of the Complete Mahler Symphonies, features The Dessoff Symphonic Choir and is available for download on iTunes.

ARVO PÄRT: Passio

Christopher Shepard, conductor
The Dessoff Choirs
PÄRT Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi secundum Joannem

A devout Eastern Orthodox Christian, Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is best known among choral enthusiasts for a group of large-scale religious works from the 1980s and ’90s, the first of which is his beautiful and haunting Passion from 1982. Through the use of chant-like lines traded among soloists, chamber players, and choir, Pärt weaves a mesmerizing musical tapestry that tells the story of Jesus’ crucifixion.

DANCE ON! Music for Choirs, Pianos & Percussion

Christopher Shepard, conductor
Steven Ryan & Dimitri Korneev, piano
The Dessoff Choirs

BERNSTEIN	Chichester Psalms
GÓRECKI	Totus Tuus
CONTE	Invocation and Dance
IVES	Circus Band (arr. Dashnaw)
BARBER	Sure on this Shining Night, Under the Willow Tree
WALKER	White Horses, My Love Walks in Velvet
JAMESON	Night Journey

The combination of lyrical voices, virtuoso pianists, and brilliant percussion is irresistible.
